Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) The Sport

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, particularly known for its effectiveness in self-defense and competitive grappling. Here's an overview and history:

Origins:

  • Judo Influence  | BJJ has its roots in judo, which was developed by Jigoro Kano in Japan in the late 19th century. Judo itself evolved from various Japanese jujutsu styles.

  • Mitsuyo Maeda  | A student of Jigoro Kano, Maeda traveled to Brazil in the early 20th century. He became friends with Gastão Gracie, a businessman, and taught judo to his children, including Carlos Gracie.

Development in Brazil:

  • Gracie Family | Carlos Gracie adapted and expanded the techniques he learned from Maeda, incorporating ground fighting techniques and strategies. Over time, this evolved into what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

  • Helio Gracie  | Carlos's brother, Helio, further refined the techniques, focusing on leverage and technique over strength due to his own physical limitations (he was smaller and less strong compared to his brothers). This made BJJ accessible and effective for people of all sizes.
